Basic Crew Training

Have you ever dreamed of sailing a schooner on the bay? This is your chance! Basic Crew Training begins Saturday March 18th and we would love to have you join us!

The MHA Crew Basics Training (CBT) program prepares volunteers to sail as crew on boats in the Maritime Heritage Alliance’s fleet. No previous sailing experience is required.

Requirements for Crew Basics Trainees:

  • Enroll as an MHA volunteer.

  • Be at least 18 years of age.

  • Youths 14-17 years can be trained if partnered with a trainee-parent or other adult per parental approval.

  • Be physically capable of carrying out the duties of a crew member.

  • Submit one-time $50 training fee at start of the course to cover the costs of the training manual and related materials. (No charge for Trainees resuming the Crew Basics).

  • If you have need of financial assistance to cover this cost please talk with the Lead Trainer.

    COVID Protocol Participants attending indoor sessions are encouraged to be fully vaccinated.

    MHA Crew Basics Classroom & Skill Sessions Includes two spring winter and early spring classroom presentations and one skills session. The focus is on familiarization with MHA and its fleet and working safely on boats. Skill sessions focus on hands-on learning and practice. On-Board Training Following completion of general MHA Crew Basics, trainees will have the opportunity to select one or all of the following paths and move forward with the additional required on-pre-season maintenance and onboard training as:

  • Schooner Madeline Trainee/deckhand; and/or

  • Cutter Champion Trainee/deckhand and/or

  • MHA Small Boats deckhand.

    Successful completion of the Crew Basics training program includes a minimum of 8 hours including 6 hours working on boat maintenance or other boat related MHA tasks. Required on-board training dates are determined in late spring. Champion and Madeline Trainees also serve as Trainee/Deckhands on scheduled sails during the sailing season.   • April 15 (A) 10:00am – Noon (B) 1-3:00 pm ON-SITE SKILL SESSION Select one date and choose session A or B. (They have duplicate content) Pre-Register; each session is limited to 10 people. -Line Handling: Coiling, making up a line, making a line fast on a kevel, pin, cleat. Knot board practice.     Shop Work & On-Board Training Sessions TBA

    The schedule for pre-season maintenance and on-board training varies for each vessel and is finalized as the time for these activities draws near. As a general guide, pre-season maintenance will continue in April and May. Typically and on-board trainings for Champion – May; Madeline - June.
